3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read, September 10, 2011
This review is from: Truth Be Told: Off the Record about Favorite Guests, Memorable Moments, Funniest Jokes, and a Half Century of Asking Questions (Hardcover)
I read Larry King's book in one sitting. I kept hearing his gravelly voice in my head. Larry's career spans so many years, he had stories from old Hollywood, such as Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope, George Burns, Marlon Brando to current stars. Some of the stories were very funny & clever. Larry has really interviewed a lot of interesting people. His story of interviewing Marlon Brando was fascinating. Marlon also wanted to do an interview on the roof where both of them were nude. Now that would have been worthwhile. Mr. King had several insider stories about Frank Sinatra that were interesting. There was a pie throwing incident I won't spoil. Larry talks a bit off & on about his divorce proceedings with his wife Shawn that were called off. He acts like it was front page news. I totally do not recall any of this, but I guess maybe somebody cared enough to stalk him with cameras. I enjoyed all of the book except Mr. King's several digs at Fox News. I get that he hates the competition, but the digs were rather juvenile & uncalled for. Apparently Larry & Bill O'Reilly will never go out for a drink anytime soon...I get that Larry is a liberal, but what do the digs at conservatives and the tea party have to do with a book about his favorite guests? These political digs that were inserted throughout the book for no particular reason made me enjoy the book a lot less. In fairness, he did say George W. Bush was classy in the manner he left the White House. This is the only polite or positive thing I recall Larry saying about anybody Republican. Given that Larry's whole reputation was for "softball" polite questioning, jumping on the tea party and conservatives so harshly & out of context seems rather odd. Like his ghost writer just stuck the references in for personal reasons.
