5.0 out of 5 stars Give Mr. M a Chance, March 24, 2012
This review is from: Mr. M (Audio CD)
The first Lambchop song I heard was "The Man Who Loved Beer." Off a David Byrne solo album, I thought this is an incredible post-Talking Heads song. Then, I looked at the liner notes and noticed it was a Lambchop cover. Around the same time they released two albums on the same day called "Aw, C'Mon" and "No, You C'Mon." I love stuff like double albums or when bands release two albums at the same time. So I purchased both of these albums and was eager to hear what this band has to offer. I may have been open-minded enough to give them a try but, I was ignorant enough to write them off as a poor-man's Crash Test Dummies. My loss. Years go by. There is that whole phrase burn me once but, burn me twice. Well, I though Lambchop had burnt me twice on that C'Mon series and I wrote them off. For some reason, I found myself years later face to face with Lambchop's "Mr. M." I didn't hear any samples before hand and I settled on buying the album. I played a couple of songs and thought to myself, I better keep this digi-pack in pristine condition so I may sell it on Amazon. But, then I heard the entire album a couple of times through. I have to say mesmerizing. This album is gorgeous. The instrumentation, the lyrics, the voice. Too too beautiful. I cannot even put this music into words. This record is amazing. I love it. The reason, I wrote the review in this fashion is because if you gave Lambchop a half-hearted chance in the past and weren't impressed. Try them out on this one. My thing is I was too stupid to get or understand the beauty and sharp humour this band has to offer. I even tried out the albums I couldn't get into previously and though I see on the above mentioned albums why I wasn't thrilled with them. They have many elements of beauty. So a brief breakdown of Mr. M is it is understated, tranquil, poetic. The instrumentation and lyrics actually take you places. After, this I gave a chance to "Hank" EP and "How I Quit Smoking" LP and am hooked on what this band has to offer. There is not a weak cut on this album. Yes, it is what you call an album that truly grows on you. It is a cinematic and atmospheric experience. So who is Mr. M? It is an album that allowed me to give the genius of Lambchop one more chance. Love it so much it is so difficult to describe the breathy tracks that float in and out like a cool fall breeze. This album will not rock you out but, it will make you think if you have a listen.

This is a very good album. I just got it.

I was fixing to order TRST by Trust it sounded really unique, dance/trance. I see you dropped your review, is something wrong with it? Let me know..

D.Keene, good to hear from you. I'm glad you are enjoying the Lambchop. No, the TRST CD is incredible. In a dance/trance/psuedo-goth type way. I dropped my review because I didn't feel it did the CD justice. Check it out, it is a fun one. Let me know what you think. Cool vocals, cool synths. Cool lyrics.

Thanks Fieval, I'll order it. You know, I listen to just about any kind of music as long as it's done well. This Trust sounds good.

I know what you mean about reviews. I always feel that I could've written a better one than I did....

D.Keene, totally respect that you are so open minded about music. I'm going to try to head to Austin tomorrow to check out Lampchop. I really enjoy that Mr. M and a lot of their other albums. You'll have to let me know what you think about "Trust" that one is really something. Makes me wonder what the Metallica-heads would think of Lambchop or Trust...lol. I bet they would hate it :) Hope you enjoy your week. I always enjoy reading your reviews. Helps me learn about new music from one of the best. Many thanks for your reviews.

Fieval Years, Trust is great! Love it, because it moves in a dark mysterious way. Sexy grooves and great weird lyrics. I dig it.

I wouldn't had known about it if you hadn't reviewed it. You ought to put it back.....Lambchop is great. How was the show?

D.Keene, glad you are enjoying the Lambchop and Trust. Yeah, that Trust CD, sent me on a few tangents trying to find other CD's like it. It is music done well for it's genre. The singer reminds me kind of is Son of Klaus Nomi starting a band. I'll put my review back up. I am glad you found it helpful. Yeah, I went to get Lambchop tickets and they sold out fast. Hopefully they'll release a DVD. This Mr. M album led me on a gateway to their music. Some of their albums are instantly likeable. They have one album called Lambchop "Is a Woman." This one was my least favorite but, then this song on it called "My Blue Wave" really hits home if you hear it all the way through. Quickly, that album was no longer in my least favorite category. I love it when you don't like a band's CD at first and suddenly it blossoms. Best wishes always.
