The Prose of an Alcoholic,

I am pretty sure there are two things Lawrence Osborne is very, very good at. One is writing, and the other is drinking.
The Wet and the Dry is sort of a travelogue where we follow Osborne as he travels through Europe and Asia while frequenting various establishments that often date back to the days of colonialism. And while in these places he will often interact with those around him who do not drink, and normally while he himself is getting and plastered.
And in these interactions and conversations we see Osborne sort of discussing the philosophy of drinking, the benefits and the evils. Often he interacts with those of the Muslim faith, and we see honest and open interaction with people who have diametrically opposed views on consuming alcohol, but the conversation is normally always held in a pleasant and cordial manner.
Osborne's prose is fluid and descriptive, he weaves in bits of history about the locale he is visiting or the history of the particular spirit or beverage he is consuming. His writing is descriptive and fluid and actually quite beautiful at times, it is clear that spirits are somewhat of a muse for him. My only complaint is that I feel like the book lacks purpose or real drive. I enjoy reading the text, but I am not eagerly anticipating what will happen next. So I guess this is more of a casual read then anything. Nice to take in on a day where there is maybe nothing better to do, then sip a drink and read.

Very good review, Rawim. If you read the author's novel, THE FORGIVEN, you will see more of his attitude toward drinking and even DUI. I was once a drinker, but now will only occasionally have one or two Samuel Adams. I certainly can't go allong with Lawrence Osborne's philosophy and way of life.
