5.0 out of 5 stars Game is awesome! -- if you play the way the developers intended!, December 2, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Far Cry 2 - PC (Video Game)
Given the many bad reviews, I was very hesitant to buy..

The reviewers could not have been more wrong. It is an AWESOME game.
A classic example of a great game which was misunderstood by most gamers.

As mentioned in most reviews, the map is huge and you have to travel all over to complete missions. It seems MOST of the negative reviews fail to understand the PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION system in the game. There are BUS STOPS clearly marked on the map -- one at the four corners of the map, and one in dead center. Dead center is your home base. The four corners are where most missions will occur.

So...after accepting a mission, go to the bus stop, board the bus for your destination, and in an instant you are transported to that corner of the map. Time of day has changed (dusk, midnite, early dawn, etc.) to imply it was a LONG bus journey... There is always a vehicle waiting for you outside. And usually, there is a weapons shop nearby (in case you want to change your weapons or ammo.)

I think 99% of negative reviewers FAILED TO UNDERSTAND this concept. (If you don't take the bus, YES it will be slow/frustrating to cross the map). There are enemy outposts and armed checkpoints along the roads, which are also patrolled by armed jeeps. If you insist on driving instead of taking the bus -- YES the game seems slow, frustrating, and impossible...

The game developers should have made this point clearer (it is not explained in the game manual). But if you play the game as intended, is a great experience.

1. Take the bus.
2. Even when driving, try to stay off-road as much as possible to avoid confrontations.
3. Don't be afraid to abandon your vehicle and go on foot. Eventually you'll find another vehicle.
4. Take the time to experiment w/ the display. May take a long time depending on your PC/graphics card, but is worth it.
5. Chose a lower resolution if necessary. I play 800x600, maxed out. If you don't play maxed-out, you are not just missing out on eye-candy. You are getting a much poorer quality experience.
6. Try turning "shadows" down. Moving/morphing shadows are PC-intensive. Turn shadows down, and max everything else.
6. Choose "realistic" setting, and play w/ your on-screen crosshairs turned off. Much harder.
7. Limit yourself to missions from the 2 rival factions -- this will progress the game story as intended.
8. Avoid random side missions, these get repetitive and don't advance the story line.

- Great single-player experience.
- Totally unscripted, non-linear gameplay. Great voice-acting. (Enemy dialogue can be hilarious and suspenseful).
- Very smart AI..the more you play, the more you will appreciate it. (AI can be down, wounded, bleeding, but still try to squeeze off a few rounds as he's dying.)
- Huge map, amazing environment, changing weather conditions/time-of-day.
- Great in-game tension and stealth gameplay. (some of the best scenarios are after taking out a target and trying to make it home while low on ammo.
- Stunningly beautiful, at max settings.

- Lack of direction from developers. Failure to utilize the "BUS" concept will result in frustrating, repetitive experience.
- Endless choice of side missions will fail to advance the storyline and can seem pointless.
- Fans of pure run/gun shooters will be frustrated by the need to for strategy, planning, and stealth.

OVERALL: Great game. In terms of single-player, non-linear, non-team based combat, voice-acting, intelligent AI, game length, replay value, and game environment, this game might sit alone at the top. It's too bad most people didn't figure it out and gave such BAD reviews! Buy it and try it!

It is a fun game, but I doubt that all of the negative reviews are from people who weren't aware of the bus. Calling other gamers stupid isn't really helpful. Different people like different things, you know. I personally think your review is very generous in terms of the AI behavior and story. Even following the main story missions, there isn't much of a story there at all, and the missions are still uniformly repetitive. Anyway, there is a lot of good information in your review, and I'm glad you like the game, because there isn't really another one like it yet.

Well, I never called anyone stupid. Just from reading reviews, I got the sense many ppl tried to drive everywhere, got frustrated, then trashed the game w/o finishing it or figuring it out. (After finishing the game, the "stats" page shows that I walked more km's than I drove.)

Also, having finished the game, I agree the story is lacking, a bit. Seems this is a double-edged sword... On the one-hand the developers opted for open-end game play, no scripted scenes, etc. I see this as a PLUS. However, it's true, b/c of this the game lacks any real "boss" scenes....big, over-the-top, cinematic, scripted shoot-outs found in most other games. I did miss these a bit. I had a few "boss-like" moments in the game -- but that was probably due to how I approached a given mission, dumb luck, timing, etc.

In retrospect, I will say that the FC2 exterior environment was awesome, but the rendering of interiors (buildings) was pretty bad. Thinking back to the original FC, IMO some of the tensest gameplay game while making your way thru buildings, leaning around corners, sudden firefights, etc.

Maybe in the next incarnation of FC, they will get both right - unscripted exterior gameplay AND good interior scripted scenes and boss fights....

It is a decent FPS after all, but bus or no bus, the name "Far Cry 2" is way too misleading. That is, with the exception of graphics, it simply cannot compare to the original Far Cry in any shape or form. Call it anything else - even something like 'Revenge of the Merc' - and it would not seem so bad. As is, Far Cry 2 dissappoints too many Far Cry fans - myself included.

Bravo sir. Your title summed it up precisely....and your tips, Pros, and Cons are spot on......especially the NO MUTANTS! comment ;)
I thoroughly enjoyed the game the first time I played through, but even more so the second, when I utilized the buses more and found that sometimes I could go cross-country on foot quicker than by vehicles/roads (and the inevitable checkpoint firefights).
It's a game that, by design, can be beaten handily.....if played smart. Or, you can go the long, hard, and tedious route. The choice is yours.
It seems the frustrated naysayers that habitually choose the latter, are unwittingly admitting failure.

Great review. I read several bad reviews in magazines and web sites, and you are correct, never mentioned the bus! Thank you, I think I will give this one a chance now.

I'm fairly confident most of the reviewers here are aware of the bus system in FC2. Truth is, even using the bus extensively (as I did), there are still long, boring, repetitive trips across a barren, ugly landscape that are unavoidable. I played this game to conclusion and it's generally a major disappointment... It has little to do with the original Far Cry and Ubisoft dropped or mishandled many of FC's best features. And worse, it's simply boring.

This review is really inaccurate. I think you are underestimating the average gamer. It doesn't take much to realize it's quicker to take the bus. However, the game IS STILL SLOW WHEN YOU TAKE THE BUS!!! You have to drive to the bus station, take the bus, then drive to the objective. The objective could be a long way from the nearest bus stop. The story was miscellaneous with no REAL point. It's just a bunch of, do this, and do that. The graphics were AMAZING! That's the only thing really good about the game. The enemy takes FOREVER to die. I understand you have to get used to the game, but Dayumm. It's like 8 shots to drop a guy. I was able to play with Max settings at the time, so I loved just watching the game. But gameplay, zzzzzzz. I beat it once, never played it again. FAR CRY 3 looks great though.

Note* Have not played this game since around release date, so this was my experience at the time.

How could you possibly get "maxed out" details at 800x600 resolution? That statement contradicts itself. If you want eye candy, you need to play at max resolution. Anything less than your LCD monitor resolution will result in blurry display and even in 2009 I had LCD display.
