Great lens, developed AF problem.,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD Large Aperture Standard Zoom Lens for Canon Digital DSLR Camera (Electronics)
This is a really great lens optically. The shots I've taken far surpass the kit lens that came with my T1i in color, contrast, and sharpness at most
focal lengths. The solid f2.8 throughout the range has made low light a snap in a lot of situations. However, after just two months,
the lens has developed a problem auto-focusing. Even in well-lit, high contrast scenes, the camera oscillates about the correct focus
position forever. Very infrequently it will stop as if it's in focus, but the scene will be completely out. None of my other lenses exhibit
I'm sending it back to Sigma for warranty repair and will update this review based on the results. I realize there are lemons with any product,
but I was already a bit leery of third-party lenses before this. I'm hoping it's just a fluke and I get back a working lens, because I was really
impressed with it until now.
Update 9/21/11: I had the lens repaired by C.R.I.S. in Arizona. Total turnaround time was 1 week including shipping. They seem to have done a great job (replaced the MR unit whatever that is). The lens seems to be back to normal after a few test shots. Revised up to 4* based on this.

it is about 3 months since you have it repaired and are you still happy with it?

How do you rate this lens in terms of IQ? I am planning to replace my 17-50 tamron (non VC) lens with this one.

From my experience with it, the IQ is very good. This is in comparison to the Canon 18-55 and other lenses with similar
aperture and within these focal lengths. I think from the reviews I've read it's pretty comparable to the lens you are replacing.

The EXACT same thing happened to my Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 after roughly 5 months since purchase date. Thanks for the review! I'm shipping it back to Sigma for them to fix and I'll use the C.R.I.S. facility since I live in Texas.
