4.0 out of 5 stars Some Disassembly Required, April 21, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Belkin F8Z492ttP Bluetooth Music Receiver (Electronics)
THIS REVIEW APPLIES ONLY TO F8Z492 A2DP RECEIVER, NOT BELKIN'S NEW HD BT RECEIVER.

This device has great audio quality and terrible range (not what is claimed), but if you've already bought it you're in luck! There is a quick modification that can restore this device to the advertised range.

Modification Instructions (you'll need a small flat head screwdriver and a hot glue gun):
Pop the top off of it with the screwdriver starting at the ports.
Pull out the circuit board and you'll see a large piece of metal. This metal is entirely unnecessary and serves only to satisfy customers who innately feel that heavier is more valuable.
The piece of metal is held in place with double sided tape, so just pop it out.
Put the circuit board back in place (it should sort of snap in).
Put hot glue around the edge of the enclosure and put the top back in place.
Now this device conforms to all the specifications that Belkin specifies.

I hope this helps everyone out! Belkin's support department has chosen to ignore my inquiries.

You're much better off with a Motorola car bluetooth hands free unit since that will also allow you to talk on your phone via your car stereo. It supports stereo music playback and telephone hands free. Signal is sent to the stereo over FM so no need for any wiring. I've had mine for a year and it's great!

[EDIT]: To those who think this comment "wasn't helpful" I was responding to a specific question from someone about whether they can use this device in their car. For some reason Amazon doesn't "nest" the comments so it's impossible to see who is responding to who... all the comments are just listed chronologically.

thank you R. Moore for not only your helpful but almost mandatory solution in getting the product to work as it was intended too. Very much appreciated.

Holy cow!! Thank you!!! This has made this stupid little useless dot so great. I hated it bc it always cut out. Removing the plate improved reception about 300%.
Brilliant. Nelkin can thank you for my dad's Christmas purchase. I've hated this thing for so long.
As for reassembly I used super glue to reattach the lid. Total time for mod was under 2 minutes.
Really thank you.

Actually, I don't think it's marketing...they probably added the weight to help keep the unit flat on a surface. If it's on a table or console unit with wires draping down, the wires can pull on it so that the front angles up. That's what happened after I removed the weight, anyway.

Make sure the audio out plug (the 1/8" plug that plugs INTO the device itself) is pushed in firmly and fully. If it's not 100% seated, you will get the horrible reverb/chorus effect every time.

My friend - you are a genius. Outstanding improvement to abreand-new out of the box product!! Maybe we can all mail our little chunks of cast metal back to Belkin so they can recycle them properly - they would probably just put them back into other new units......
