5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, what are you talking about?, February 25, 2000
This review is from: Mission Impossible [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I don't quite get the bad reviews for this film. Its one of my All-Time favorites, and sure, it takes brains to follow the storyline. Yeah? So? I think that you have become to accustomed to action movies with no stories, just people getting blown up. This movie centers around Ethan Hunt (Cruise) an IMF agent sent on a mission in Keiv. The mission goes wrong and its up to Ethan to figure out what happened. He soon finds himself trying to keep a IMF NOC list from getting into the wrong hands. But whose hands are those? This movie does involve some thinking, and you may have to view it a few times to truly appreciate, but isn't that what a great movie does? You pick up new things every time you view. The movie stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Jon Voigt in a great role and other well known actors and actresses.

the reason I hate this movie is because it's lame. This is why, mission impossible was about a TEAM of agents fighting evil. this is about ONE guy fighting evil americans. seriously? and the sequels continued this, they couldn't find a bad guy who wasn't american. one of the three movies with a bad traitor would be ok but all three? and where's the team? no team. this is just shlock.

Actually the opening scene is in Kiev, however the city where the mission goes awry is in Prague. If your going to write reviews make sure what you say is correct. To Michael Dobey actually the last MI film Ghost Protocol was centered on a team doing the mission. I loved the first movie and I also liked 3&4. MI2 was not in my opinion a true MI film but a great John Woo action film starring Tom Cruise. My only issue with MI is that it has Jim Phelps the bad guy where he was the good guy in the show. Other than that I loved the movie.

I agree MI2 was horrible, but John Woo is the worst director in Hollywood, if it's a "Woo film" it's sure to have way too many slow mo scenes = ridiculous!

The main reason to dislike this movie isn't because it's a bad movie, it's because they made the good guy from the tv show into a surprise twist villian. It's like if you went to see James Bond and at the end Bond turned out to be the villian... it just wouldn't happen. It was poor writing and a poor twist and it completely insulted the show that it's based on.

Ignoring the show, it's a fun movie. But since it's based on the show, you can't ignore the show and its characters.

MI3 is where it really gets good. And if the trailer for MI5 is any indication, the REAL MI trilogy will be 3-5.
