First Great Vehicle Set... so good I want to look at the other ones!,
This review is from: LEGO City Great Vehicles 60057 Camper Van (Toy)
I bought this set as a companion to the Lego Creator Mountain Hut to fit an outdoor theme. First this is my first Great Vehicle set and WOW, it does not disappoint! There are many hidden details inside of this camper that I love like a TV, a bed, a breakfast area, vents on the roof, coffee mugs and hidden storage for canoe paddles and life preservers. When I first saw this set I was immediately drawn to the camper's elegant design. I loved the shape and curve of the roof and the size of the vehicle. After putting the vehicle together it looks as good, if not better than, the picture on the box.
Build: 5 out of 5. This is an easy and fun build with simple directions. The directions come in two booklets and the pieces come in two bags, marked 1 and 2, that match he instructional booklets. I think this might be overkill as each instruction only adds one or two pieces at a time; however, this product is marketed to ages 5-12, so I understand why the directions are so easy to follow (after all, it is "so easy a five year old could do it). The only difficulty I had was placing the stickers on the pieces they belong to. I love Lego stickers because they add so much detail (like the TV, license plate and "city" decal on the front of the RV. But, I am a perfectionist and sometimes it is difficult to line up the stickers perfectly on the pieces they belong to. Bottom line: it's not a challenge to build this set, but it is still fun and detailed.
Design: 4 out of 5. This is a fun set and it is very creative. As I mentioned before there are a lot of details and features in this set. I love the fact that the entire roof lifts off (as a design feature, not me forcing it off) and I love that one entire side of the RV is hinged for easy access into the camper. The TV is a nice touch as are the coffee mugs, bed, seating area, vents on the roof and canoe with life vests and paddles. Also, it goes perfectly with the Lego Creator set "Mountain Hut" due to the outdoors theme both sets share. All that said, I wish the set had a ladder or steps or something that would allow the mini-figures to access the canoe.
I highly recommend this set. It's great for ages 5 and up. Typical sets are great for 7 and up but due to the easy instructions, simple design and the fact that this is a big vehicle, I think a 5 year old wouldn't have much trouble building and playing with this set.
