not 100% end grain... cracked on the shelf with proper treatment,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mountain Woods 18 X 12 Rectangle End Grain Cutting Board
Another update (3 months): The board now cracked on the shelf along an area that was sealed with wood glue (see original review). It renders the board useless/unsanitary since the crack goes through the board. It turned out that these 'surface scratches' (initial review) are structural damages that were glued together pretty poorly. AVOID!
Here my initial review:
The quality and description of the board are not 100% ok in my eyes.
First, the board surface is not 100% end grain. The 6 lighter stripes in the photo are ~3/4" pieces in 'regular' orientation. This defies the entire purpose of an end grain board in my eyes. At least parts of the blade will dull as fast as on a regular board. I am quite surprised that no one else found this worth mentioning?
The 2nd issue is that 2-3 small minor surface cracks in the wood were sloppily filled with epoxy/wood glue (?). Excess glue was at the sides and on the cutting surface. The area underneath was unsealed and had to be treated with mineral oil. All in all, while not of the most stellar quality, the board otherwise looks and feels nice, and the knife moves quite fast on it. So, I decided to keep it - the price is still very good...
Update: The board warped slightly 1 week after arrival while not even being used. I oiled it, never immersed it, and immediately dried it. Pretty disappointing.
