This review is from: The Sorcerers and Their Apprentices: How the Digital Magicians of the MIT Media Lab Are Creating the Innovative Technologies That Will Transform Our Lives (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What's this?)If you want to know about this book, Google SixthSense (all one word). Then look at the videos. MediaLab people have used technology available today to provide a mobile source of knowledge. In some ways this could change the world as much as Google's search engine has done. This product would be as necessary as a mobile phone, yet a lot easier to understand and use.
While reading this book I was reminded of the Wright Brothers. They invented the airplane by creating things that had never existed before, piece by piece. They made airframes and propellers with nothing to guide them. As I understand it, the theory of flight wasn't fully understood until around 1909, six years after the first flight. It's not like say, making the world's fastest desktop computer, which simply involves choosing the right parts. As with the Wright Brothers, the MediaLab people are discovering the rules as they go along.
And it's true; these inventions will change the world. One great piece of information I got from here was we should think of the entire population of the world as disabled, and what we regard today as "disabled" as just tending toward the extreme.
Frank Moss, who until recently was director of the Media Lab, has put together a very readable account of just some of the activities of the Lab. If you've got any interest in the immediate future of technology, read this book.
