Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Down To Earth (Remastered) (Audio CD)
I bought this with some hesitation because several reviewers commented that it marked a commercial turn in Rainbow's sound. I would say that the new vocalist makes the real difference here. I love Dio, and I'm not trying to compare the two.
Anyway, if you could imagine Rainbow with Rob Halford at the mike, then you've got a good idea of the overall sound of this CD. In fact for the longest time I thought Since You've Been Gone was a Judas Priest tune, a second venture along rock and roll lines like Livin' After Midnight on their British Steel Album.
I really can't see commercialism moving in here. I would say there's maybe a more rock 'n' roll good time sort of overall feel, with somewhat more noticeable blues influence, and of course with the loss of Dio, there's no reference to fantasy and so the album ends up being much, much less of a fantasy sound track (though I do highly, highly recommend Rainbow Rising, which is). Instrumentally the album has a lot of Rainbow signatures like some use of keyboards, a little middle-eastern sound accented soloing, some galloping riffing, etc.
I would also mention that what may have sounded comparatively commercial thirty, to some--30 or more years ago, wouldn't necessary come across as commercial today. There is no way, now way, that Down To Earth is a mere 4 star album, and I'm hoping that my rating here will push up the overall rating. Buy and enjoy!
