Robert Arthur is the new kid in Lovecraft Middle School and before he knows it, he's on his way to discovering not much is what it seems to be at his new school.
No doubt like a lot of other readers, I was drawn to this book by the title's mention of Lovecraft. You wouldn't necessarily expect to find references to the Cthulhu Mythos in a book aimed at such a young audience but there are a few to be found. The younger audience won't have any point of reference for what's likely to be their first encounter with these beings but I think adult Lovecraft fans (like me) will get a kick out of the references.
The story is an easy read and moves along at a good pace. It keeps you wanting to see what happens next and before you know it, you've torn through the book already! I don't think it ever gets too scary, maybe a little gross here or there but in a way you can laugh at it and go "ew!" I think this would be a good step up book for kids who like Goosebumps or watch The Haunting Hour. Kids should easily fall in with the main characters and I know if I'd read this when I was the target age, I'd be having my own pretend adventures at Lovecraft Middle School.
