This review is from: Orient Men's CEM75001B 200m Diver Watch21 Jewels Black Watch (Watch)
I had been looking at various moderately priced automatic diver-style watches and chose the Orient Mako XL for a few reasons. First, I liked the aesthetics of the watch. It's large and sporty enough to wear out at sea or out about town in casual clothes, yet elegant enough to wear with a suit. The second reason for choosing this watch was the reputation of Orient watches which are known for their solid and dependable in-house movements. With a 45mm case the watch is larger than most dive watches, but it's not at all bulky and it wears very well. The brushed stainless steel bracelet is solid, except for the end links, but the quality is more than adequate for a watch in this low price range. Overall fit and finish of the case rivals that of more expensive watches. Water resistance is rated at 200 metres, which for me simply means I can swim with it. I am not a professional diver, so that was not a factor in my purchase. The mineral crystal is clear and free from any smudges or defects. The unidirectional timing bezel is aligned to the markers on the dial with precision and operates with ease. The dial is clean with bilingual day/date windows, is easy to read, and the Orient logo and Water Resist script are tastefully done. Somewhat disappointing is the luminescence on the hands and markers which is decent, but doesn't seem to last very long and is nowhere near the intensity of a Seiko diver. Where this watch really shines is in it's incredibly accurate automatic movement. I have been wearing this watch steadily since it arrived from Amazon last week and it has only gained 3 seconds within the week. Amazing, considering that I have 2 Seiko automatics and a Hamilton with a Swiss movement that gain about 4-5 seconds a day. I don't know if I lucked out with this particular Orient watch, but I am extremely pleased with its accuracy and design. Despite the rather mediocre luminescence, the Mako XL represents a tremendous value in automatic dive watches and I would highly recommend it.
