This review is from: Return of the Living Dead 2 (DVD)
I loved Dan O'Bannon's original Return of the Living Dead - it's such a delirious, crazy, humourous and totally OTT movie with great comic acting from the entire cast, numerous set-pieces to cherish, and catchphrases that still make me chuckle to this day... There's nothing quite like the original - and, sadly, that includes this sequel...
When Part II was released in cinemas I was straight in there, despite O'Bannon not being behind the camera, but I must admit I was horribly disappointed at the time. The tone was completely different, the ghoulish punk soundtrack absent, the script less sharp ... it just seemed like a lame re-hash without any of the original's spark.
So why the 4 stars? Well, despite being a disappointment when compared with the original, time has been kind to this one ... or, rather, the films that have come after it have been so much worse they make this one look good! I had this discussion with a friend recently after watching this again on VHS, and we both agreed that they sure don't make 'em like this anymore, and that's a crying shame. The passage of time has mellowed the disappointment I felt on first seeing it, and judged on its own merits there's much to enjoy here, including the return of the original's central comedy double-act (same actors playing different characters), lots of goofy zombie humour, and of course there's that memorable Michael Jackson Thriller gag...
Overall, it's only half as good as the original was - but it's still twice as good as anything of the sort that came after it.
