This review is from: Pogoplug Backup and Sharing Device (Camera)
I paid for the Pogo Plug device and hooked up a hard drive. Twice it has erased all the files on my hard drive. I am unable to edit any files on my pogo plug hard drive such as disabling collaboration. I was told by customer support this had to be done on the web browser, it still didn't work. Finally customer service told me I had to purchase their software to edit my hard drive files. I was never told this when I purchased the device. I was told I could make a one time purchase and have my own cloud for life and with no additional charges.
The web site is the most unfriendly user website I have ever encountered. Nothing is intuitive. They offer software and don't explain what the software will allow you to do. I can put files on my pogo plug hard drive and access them from my iPad and a web browser, but the main reason I did this was to allow my family access to my photos. Granted I can erase all the files from my pogo plug, but I can't edit permissions. What they really want you to do is buy cloud storage, buying the device is to suck you in to buy additional storage or software. Buyer beware.

This is also my experience. Pogoplug is a complete waste of money. They try to suck you in to buy 'cloud space'. For a Mac user, the best thing to do to create a 'home cloud', is to plug a hard drive in an old computer that is not used anymore, and leave the computer on, as it will be acting as a server. It is very easy to network all the Macs in a home.

This scaring experience happened to me too. One of my 2TB drive has 3 partitions, after plug into Pogoplug, it erased my 2 of 3 partitions and I lost 1.5G data. I was like, "oh, no...". I spent 2 years to collect these data. Just be very careful with this device. Plug in a hard disk which you don't care, do NOT EVER connect your family photo hard disk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't buy if you think it is network drive device, it's all about the "cloud" for Pogoplug.

I completely agree about their website. It is a mess. Nearly impossible to get anything useful about their different devices. It's as if they wanted to tease you with sparse information and then make it impossible to understand how each device works. I am amazed they're still in business considering their online incompetence.

You might be happier with
* OwnCloud ($0 community edition)
* FreedomBox (perhaps on $35 RaspberryPi)
* ArchLinuxARM (on this pogoplug)
The product images shown when I purchased this pogoplus show version 4 hardware:
(dual rear USB3 ports)
