Good, But a Bit Jumbled in Parts,
This review is from: Elegy for Eddie (Maisie Dobbs Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have enjoyed Jacqueline Winspear novels previously, and had looked forward to the next in the Maisie Dobbs series. Now, with Downton Abbey back on PBS, it was an even more interesting read given Maisie's history of rising from the downstairs to the upstairs class, and of her discomfort with the social requirements of one accompanying James Compton.
There are many threads to follow in this story -- 2 murders, 1 attempted murder, political intrigue (it is set in 1933), Maisie's romance with James, Maisie's ambivalence about moving to the country home she inherited, her relationships with her employees, and her relationship with her father, to name a few. Most of the threads are very well written and thought-out. In others, I found myself skipping ahead a bit because they just didn't seem like they merited so much attention. It might well have been a shorter book and been equally satisfying.
Like other reviewers, I found that I had to finish it once I had started it, spending a chunk of a weekend reading the book (it's a fast read). I will, most likely, read the next Maisie Dobbs Novel because I find the main character to be very likable, and I do enjoy how Winspear writes mysteries. If you're not a very tough critic of these types of novels (light on the mystery and heavy on the character development), you will enjoy it. If you want more mystery and less character chatter, especially self-analysis, you'll want to skip this one.

I wonder that your review is so much like the 3 star reviews but you gave it 4 stars. I appreciate your comments but I do wonder how many stars you would have given this book if you had had to buy it!
