This review is from: Murakami: Ego (Hardcover)
Ego is the companion catalog to the Murakami exhibition held at the ALRIWAQ Doha museum in Qatar. It's a large format, full-color book with quality paper and solid binding. The main emphasis of this book is in presenting Murakami's newest works created since his massive "Copyright Murakami" retrospective back in 1997. The book is almost entirely full color pictures with only about 20 pages devoted to text. You get to see paintings, sculptures, installations, and animation stills. There are several foldout pages to show off a few of the extra wide paintings. The work continues in his trademark Superflat style and even though he has been exhibiting for over twenty years now his paintings have a very 21st century feeling. Ego is a nice addition to the older Copyright Murakami retrospective book. There are a handful of older pieces shown but it's mostly new work since 1998 including pieces done in 2012. To get the complete career overview the Copyright Murakami book remains the definitive retrospective and is a must-have. If you already have that book there is very little overlap in images and Ego is well worth purchasing. Highly recommended for new and old Takashi Murakami fans.
