3.0 out of 5 stars Really disappointing, June 1, 2012
This review is from: The New Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide (Sunset Western Garden Book) (Paperback)
I usually buy each new edition of this book when it comes out. But this edition really missed the boat. The value of the book was that if you buy a plant that is new to you, you could find it in the book because the plants are cross referenced by common names - they redirect one to the proper name. In the new book this is missing. There is no way to find a plant unless you know the proper name in advance. For a lot of the plants I buy, I don't know the proper name, and I've been gardening for more than 50 years.

You could use the index.

I totally agree. I like the previous edition much better for its user friendliness. I own a nursery and have a degree in Horticulture, so I can usually find what I'm looking for. The average homeowner would be lost. I randomly picked a plant- Japanese Maple- a very common plant for this area- to look up by common name in the index. Closest I came, after being redirected 3 times, was the scientific name for maple. So the index is not as thorough as it has been in the past either.

Which edition (year) did you find the most helpful? I'm looking to buy but don't know much about plants.

I couldn't agree more, although I would have given it only one star! This was a waste of dollars for me, as I've returned to the previous edition which is explanatory and helpful. I would suggest to anyone thinking of buying this, only do so if you're seeking a picture book!

To save space, you're now supposed to look up the common name in the Plant Name Index. One more step. But the space saved allows them to add more plants and other sections.
