3.0 out of 5 stars Batteries are expensive and hard to find, July 6, 2009
This review is from: Canon VIXIA HFS100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom - 2009 MODEL (Electronics)
I bought this camcorder two weeks ago. It works as advertised. Be advised the 1.7 zoom feature cannot be activated if the camcorder is recording. BE WARNED - batteries are very expensive ($120-$225)and must be special ordered. Several sites offer discounted batteries but do not have them in stock. When you place your order they call you to get you to switch to a cheap ($20-$50) generic battery that does not communicate with the camcorder, that is you don't know how much power is left in the battery. If you choose to use this battery you must tell the camcorder to use it every time you start recording.

If you want this camcorder, be sure to order the batteries through your local camera shop, the internet is a little to dicey.

The lack of a viewfinder is annoying as well. I though I could get by without it but the drain on the included battery (1 hr max at hi rez) makes the lack of a viewfinder mystifying.

I don't have buyers remorse but given the battery situation and the lack of a viewfinder makes me think I should have waited for the next incarnation.

I bought a generic battery that has a power remain meter on it and it lasts MUCH longer than the one that came with mine. I was reluctant at first until I realized how long it lasted after trying it with a lot of shooting. There is the fact that you must always tell the camera to accept it, but only when you power on. To me it's no big deal. It does stick out of the back about 3/4", but that is also no big deal to me. Another nice feature of this battery is that you can plug your Vixia A/C adaptor to it and it is charging while you're shooting with your camera and the battery that came with it. In other words, you do NOT need to have the battery in the camera to charge it. I think this is a nice feature and useful...

At any rate, here is the battery I bought, and the site I bought it from. The price was definitely right and the delivery was fast...

What a dissapointing review. A potential consumer has no idea what to expect of the video quality or features of this product from reading your review. 1 hour of battery life is great for a camcorder, so not sure this is a negative.
Someone who reads the specs can see there is no viewfinder, so not sure this should show up in the review. I mean, call a spade a spade, don't say this spade sucks because it's not a shovel...

What is this guy talking about? Any moron can buy a battery for a camera, we don't need this dork telling us stuff we already know.
Who is this 'they' he references??? If you buy from amazon nobody calls you and offers you batteries. Try to not be a dead-head, lay off the weed bro
