Poorly written for a Yale College Professor
, March 5, 2011
This review is from: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (Kindle Edition)
I realize this is a memoir, however it is so poorly written. I was shocked being that Amy Chua is a Yale college professor. I read the book for book club and I must say it was the most lively disscussion from eight woman I have every been involved in. Three woman are asian (all moms), in fact all but one of the eight are moms with all various age children. Most did not like her "Tiger Mom" style of parenting, including me and felt Amy Chua was narcessistic. I did feel compelled to read this book to the end, however it was mostly because I wanted to know how her children responded to this style of parenting. I thought it was interesting that she did not have this same style with her dogs and basically allowed them to do whatever they wanted! I feel Amy Chua raised her children in a bubble not allowing them to truly explore and I dentify what their passion is, as she dictated it for them. What I resented was the way she "dissed" western style parenting being substandard to Chinese parenting. Yes she did "produce" amazing musicians and very well educated children, that being said they still have to function and negotiate in a "Western" society which I believe Amy Chua did a disservice to them by NOT preparing for that socialization.
