5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Item for Travel, Backpacking, Camping, Etc, July 1, 2009

This review is from: Eton NFR160WXB Microlink Self-Powered AM/FM/NOAA Weather Radio with Flashlight, Solar Power and Cell Phone Charger (Black) (Electronics)
This is truly a phenomenal product. Everything works as described, including the cell phone charging which can be quite a boon when going away from electricity - abroad, to other countries, or hiking/camping/backpacking.

The light - powerful halogen type LEDs that power the device, as strong as a good bike light. Battery can be charged via solar or hand crank. Three to five minutes of hand crank has given me over two hours of battery life, and still no sign of dying battery. That's quite a great find for people who need a flashlight all the time like I do.

The radio - a bit weak with the speakers, but works. Includes a weather band. A bit of a blah item, especially since the dials pop off all the time.

The charger - Great little device. Can charge all your Apple iPod products, including bluetooth headsets, and your iPhone. A big reason I waited for the next gen Eton charger was for the iPhone charging...really great and works well. Charge your iPhone, iPhone 3G (and probably the new 3GS).

Well worth $30

Does not charge the iPhone 3Gs. Most generic USB charging devices do not charge the iPhone 3Gs. This is more a limitation/restriction of the iPhone 3Gs and not a problem of the USB charging source, in this case, the eton radio.

Halogen and LED's are completely different.

Don't see anything on the Eton site about iPhone compatibility and I've tested mine with the original and 3G iPhones and it does not appear to charge either one. You need to edit this review or remove it. You're not helping anyone by putting out false assertions on it's functionality.

I want to get this mainly for the light and cell phone charge functions. Does the cell phone charging function, in particular, work with solar power or can it be charged only via the hand cranking mechanism?

Good question. The cell phone charger is poor, it only works when you physically crank the device. You cannot charge the internal battery of the lamp and then charge a cell phone. I think the amperage is simply not enough. I use it to charge an iPhone and it's painful, and very very slow trickle of a charge.

I have never used solar and don't even know how long it would take to charge the internal battery for light/radio use.

Hey man,

I gotta say, you should really consider updating your original review on this unit. You made it seem like it was a great cell phone charger, then when I read into the comments, it looks like it really sucks. Very misleading, and I almost wasted my money on this unit because of it. I don't know if its a truly phenomenal product if you're not too high on the radio or charger. Sounds more like a 3 out of 5.
