5.0 out of 5 stars Puscifer is many things, November 30, 2013

This review is from: What Is... (DVD)
"What is Puscifer? Puscifer is many things..."

Much more than a concert film, this is multi-layered entertainment, character, extent, extrinsic, and existential exploration. With a hefty mash of BS.

"Life is too short not to create something with every breath that we draw."

You could describe "What Is..." as part sketch comedy (featuring Maynard JK as Billy D Burger, Carina Round, Laura Milligan as Hildy Burger, among many others) and part concert film (professionally shot multi-camera), although neither of those classifications capture what this film truly represents.

If you've seen Puscifer live, this film is an extension of that experience. If you missed the live show, this film is second only to a front row seat. And if you have no idea what the hell Puscifer even is, this is your introduction.

"...All around a central fire."

The concert footage is excellent. Longer than average takes, lots of good camera work, clean editing, just enough emphasis on background visuals, and supremely mastered audio.

The sketches are sometimes disproportionate to the concert footage, but it's the fruit juice chasers of Major Douche, Peter Merkin, and the Burgers that make the indispensable wisdom of Maynard JK and the stunning beauty of Carina's voice and movement so incredibly easy to imbibe.

A nascent cocktail that proves there is much more alive and to life, beyond and before TOOL.

Some people will probably prefer to watch this clean and without the chaser, but for the rest of us that understand Puscifer is the manifestation of many different parts, you're going to appreciate the catharsis. Few have tried to wrangle this menagerie before and few if any, until now, have succeeded in fashioning together something this superbly entertaining.

Turn on, turn it up, and enjoy. No real hippies allowed.

One side note: Laura Milligan plays Hildy Berger.
Carina Round does do the female vocals in the concert film, and is the backing vocalist in the "country" show.
