GREAT gameplay, little let down from campaign,
This review is from: StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Expansion Pack (Video Game)
1st thing, the gameplay was amazingly fun, especially the campaign, adjusting your armies abilities, and kerrigans abilities, boss fights, level designs were all amazing. And multiplayer is still very good, many mechanics really encourage immediate fighting rather than stand stills for like 15-20 minutes of nothign happening.
Now the dialogue.. This is where I begin to criticize. Remember the SC1 Breifings? Personally I would always sit and listen to each and every one, because characters had something interesting to say. Now in SC2+hots i just skim over the dialogue. NOBODY has anything interesting to say. The writer's of SC2 seem to have a much smaller vocabulary. Yeah remember when Kerrigan had a sense of humor, and that she was always making some sarcastic remark? Rarely any witty comments from the "Queen #* of the universe". In sc2 there were alot of pointless lines of dialogue, not memorable at all.
Now the story.. Examples SC1 "I'm the man whos gonna kill you some day" raynor... now SC2 "I haven't given up on you sarah!" Raynor. Look I bet some book somewhere explained the romance between the two but this romantic story is rather weak and quite frankly doesn't make sense. Also the whole theme of revenge, by itself is not bad. HOWEVER, you should remember that in Brood war, kerrigan was easily able to crush, the United earth directorate, a protoss fleet, AND mengsks fleet all in one fell swoop. And in sc1 Kerrigan was interesting in more than just simple revenge. She wanted mengsk to remember what he had caused, wanted him to live and suffer the consequences of her existence as the Queen of blades. Sooooo this story we have now, to me, is completely inconsistent with the Sc1 story. to summarize the story in one word, inconsistent.
But overall guys, gameplay was solid and i LOVE the gameplay. Story/dialogue, meh... Hopefully that was helpful to SC1 fans lol

Yeah, it is explained in a book, several actually. Still, you are right, they could have done a better job with it in the game.

I completely agree with you. There were some epic speeches and memorable lines in the first SC.

"Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the Overmind; the eternal will of the Swarm, and that you have been created to serve me."

J. Leichtnam says:
Only thing I disagree with, at all, is the " kerrigan was easily able to crush, the United earth directorate, a protoss fleet, AND mengsks fleet all in one fell swoop" comment. She needed help to fight off the UED and even after she got the help from her fairly unwilling 'partners', it wasn't necessarily easy for her to oust them. Past that she wasn't keen on letting her temporary allies live after the fact because she felt like they would become a problem later, knowing how resourceful and potentially dangerous they were. She also played the armies on each other, helping her in turn to defeat each one. All of the in fighting between them is what allowed her to ascend to power really, though she was the one who masterminded it.
And like Brendan said, the inconsistencies are explained in several books, but you really should not HAVE to read the books for it to stay consistent within the game universe itself (between SC1 and SC2). I wholeheartedly agree with you there.

Good review, especially on the dialogues. I want to add to your last part: Human emotions are sometimes fickle. What we want originally in our motives can sometimes change during the course of time and the unfolding of events. So I wouldn't say that the character's motives and agendas are inconsistent. Rather, they are just being humans.

Totally agree with Philen on the "inconsistency". Of course he would want to kill the Queen of Blades but when he sees that she could be or speak like Sarah Kerrigan again he has hope. Like they say: Hope is the last one that dies. I have not finished the campaign yet, do not have enough time to play the damn game these days. I totally dig the story in general, agree though that dialogues in HoS are weak but the story line general from the original SC to SC2:HoS is much better than some movies and shows you watch on TV nowadays.
