This review is from: Fish Out of Water (Audio CD)I first heard and bought this record 25 years ago. Now, long after I have put away most of my prog-rock albums, I bought this on CD and realized how powerful and beautiful this music really is and how well it stands up over the time.
"Fish out of Water" does not at all, in retrospect, sound like a Seventies album. It sounds like music, without any sort of date or place attached to it. One did not "have to be there" because the "there" here are the songs themselves. It is truly brilliant the way Squire uses his Bass as a lead instrument: in counterpoint to the vocals and other instrumentations. There is no lead guitar on this recording. In that way it stands to the side of the rock paradigm without actually abandoning it.
The songs are so abstract and dreamy. Suitable not only for kids in high school, but also what they have become 20 or more years later.
