Tool for kids into Converge,
This review is from: Oceanic (Audio CD)
Crushing at times, beautiful at times, and always a good listen. Isis's "Oceanic" really surprised me when I picked it up last September. Gone are the days of the pure brutality of the Mosquito Control EP, instead Oceanic relies on buildups and dynamics. The production on Oceanic is absolutely amazing, the instrumental aspects are very clear, especially the guitars. And Aarron's vocals are mixed in so they become more of an extra instrument rather than coming to forefront. But where the production truly shines is in the little quirks in the background, like the barely audible female vocals on "The Beginning of the End" and just the overall feel of the album.
Weight has to be the most climatic song I've ever heard, even more so than stuff by Godspeed, You Black Emperor! and Mogwai, the first few minutes are very quiet, but by the time the song ends it proves to one of the greatest epics of all time.
