This review is from: Iron Man 6" Figure War Machine (Toy)
War Machine, if you didn't know, is Iron Man's best buddy, as seen in the film Iron Man 2 and pre-suited (played by a different actor) in the original Iron Man film, and naturally, in the comic book universe of Marvel. Because I'm more of a movie fanatic than anything, I went with the movie versions when building a Marvel action figure collection. I also find movie-based figures to be more realistic looking since they are modeled after something that HAS to look very tangible, or modeled after real actors' faces. This War Machine figure is a great example of the former. With all its detail and excellent paint and sculpting, this is a truly great looking action figure. It's very well articulated also, though I am unsure about a couple of points. It looks as if the legs can move up and down at the hips, but I haven't had any luck getting them to, and with a nice figure like this, when a joint is tight enough that I'm not sure if it's supposed to go a certain direction, I am not willing to risk breaking it by trying. The legs bend well at the knees though and can spread outward from the hips. The feet appear to have slight articulation, but, again, it's a touchy area. The arms are fully articulated and the figure comes with three pairs of hands: gripping, fist, and open poses. War Machine also comes with two ammo attachments for the big gun on his shoulder and a covering for one of the attachment areas for when not in use. In almost every way, a brilliant action figure!
So, what's the problem? Why dock this igure one star? Well, this figure is supposed to be the War Machine for 6 inch scale collectors. I'm sorta stuck in that realm because I started collecting Marvel movie figures that size back with the first Spider-Man movie, as well as X-Men and Fantastic Four. It was a bit worrisome when the new line of really small figures started coming out. I was really relieved when I heard that some Wal-Mart exclusive Captain America, Thor, and Nick Fury 6 inch movie figures are coming out. Please keep them coming! And maybe do a little backtracking? I'm still waiting for 6 inch movie versions of Elektra, Kitty Pryde, and Silver Surfer. Don't get me started on how impossible to find Iceman is. What's the deal with that? He's not even in iced-up form. But back to War Machine. Frankly, considering that this is a guy in thick, heavy armor, he should probably be slightly larger than other six inch figures, right? Well, as with the matching Iron Man figure, he is not. He is the same size as some and smaller than others. Jeez, those new Thor and Nick Fury figures (just got those, and I assume Cap is the same, but I'm waiting for an Avengers Movie Cap) tower over this War Machine figure. That just ain't right. They are all supposed to be for the 6 inch scale collectors. I wish I could compare these with ALL my Marvel 6 inch movie figures, but most are packed for moving right now, but knowing how my Iron Man figure looked with my others, and seeing this War machine next to the new Thor and Nick Fury figures, I can clearly see that these figures are not mixing well, and that's pretty darn annoying. Bottom line, War Machine is an outstanding figure, but too short for a 6 inch collection, as are the 6 inch Iron Man figures. I'm wondering if the Marvel Select versions are the choice to go with. Not sure how much larger those are. Probably TOO large for my other 6 inch figures, but maybe a better match with these new ones like Thor, Nick, and Cap. Oh well. If you aren't trying to build a big, Marvel movie crossover collection and just want a great War Machine figure, this will impress. If you are trying to build an awesome Marvel movie group like I am, well, it's been kinda frustrating now and then, and the size of this figure and those new Avenger characters will only add to the frustration, especially at around 15 bucks a pop most places.
