3.0 out of 5 stars Love CW, but they are struggling to stay original, November 21, 2012

This review is from: Home For Christmas (Audio CD)
I have every Celtic Woman CD, so I've obviously been a fan from the outset. However, they've never been able to recreate the magic of that first album. And as many others have noted, they do recycle a great number of songs on each successive CD. This Christmas album is worth purchasing, but their attempt to inject Irish musicality into the classic standards is becoming redundant. Some of the songs just sound rushed to market, with smooth melding of Irish musicality becoming an afterthought.
This album is great ambient Christmas music for a home or party; just don't expect it to be another breakthrough album of magical Celtic Woman tunes.

I thought my CD was a pirated one and the great sounds of the CW voices did not appear to be originals

This is my only exposure to Celtic Women. The cd came with an insert sheet listing their shows around the country for the next six months or so. Several of them were within a half hour drive. I won't be going to any of them. The vocals sounded thin and uninteresting. The accompaniment was just as boring.

@ A Reader ... Don't be too quick to judge. Celtic Woman, especially live in concert (which I can attest to having seen them live in concert 27 times including 18 times front row), is far, far better live than on this newest release. Having been a staunch CW fan for the last 6 years, I can promise you that you would be doing yourself a disservice by NOT attending at least one of their concerts especially if several take place within a half hour of your home. Please give them more of a chance than just judging them by this new Christmas CD. Yes they are not the original CW that started out in September 2004 but, they are still extremely magical and extremely enjoyable and I can all but promise you that you would not be disappointed by attending one of their near-by concerts.

this is a really lousy CD and I'm oh, so sorry I bought it for a dear friend. It has dropped his opinion of my ability to select winners !!! I said this sounded like a women's group from a neighborhood church choir, and he said that was too generous.

John ... it's me, Bill, in CT.

I take it you are less than thrilled with the current CW line-up? I have nothing against Lisa L or Susan but CW has strayed wayyyyy away from where they first were when they started out with Lisa K, Chloe, Mairead and Meav and Orla. I admit that. And I also think downing-sizing from 5 members to 4 was a mistake too. I'll always especially love Lynn and Alex but, no matter how you slice it, it isn't the same. I'll still attend a show or 2 but, I'm no longer flying all over the country to attend 10 or 12 CW concerts a year as in the past. Just one or two local and that's about it. Give me a shout back. Let me know where you stand on this. Thanks ... Bill

I'll only come to the CW defense with this response: the voices are indeed thin, however that's the genre. The traditional Irish soprano voice is thin and lilting, with subtle melodies and lovely harmonies. It's not a voice known for its projection, roundness, or suitability on the musical theater or operetta stage.

Wow, you are one devout fan. I'm going to see their live Christmas show in my city weekend after next. I'll report back with a review. The first time I saw them--in a non-holiday concert--they were magical!

I fully agree with you Bill. I attended one concert last year and it was fine. Meav was not with the group and she has such a wonderful voice.

I read somewhere that CW was sold to one of the singers but I do not know who.
