This review is from: Lego Pirates of the Caribbean - Playstation 3 (Video Game)
When I first heard of the Lego video game franchise, I was dubious. I am a middle aged (I hate to admit that) gamer, who plays a variety of video games because of my teen years in the 1980's was spent in front of Donkey King, Asteroids, Pac-Man and my personal favorite, Galaga. While a lifelong Lego fan, when I first learned that Lego was putting out games, I thought it was a video building set. What fun could that be? However, I began to hear tales of Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, and quickly fell into the trap. After playing Lego Indiana Jones, LEGO Batman, and my personal favorite LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, I was officially hooked. So it was with great anticipation that I heard about this game. After playing it for a few hours, I have to say, Lego has done it again.
Taking the very successful movie franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean", Lego has crafted a game the whole family can love. Starring all of the main characters from the first three movies, as well as new characters from the soon-to-be released "On Stranger Tides", Lego Pirates is a great mashup of the story. One of the things that sets these Lego games apart is the wicked sense of humor that is placed in the sometimes too long cut scenes. The jokes in the scenes somehow manage to poke fun at the movies, while honoring them at the same time. The end result is wanting to watch the movies again! It's a fine line between mocking and funny, and Lego wins every time.
As far as the game play, the game is similar to the others. Lots of fairly easy puzzles to solve, lots of destruction to earn studs. In fact, the breaking of things happens to be one of my favorite parts. It's a great stress reliever, especially when the item explodes into many hundreds worth of studs (not to mention the multipliers!) and you not only get to break things, but get rewarded for doing so.
- Engaging swashbuckling fun!
- Ability to play many different characters in "Free Play" Mode
- Creative, if not challenging, puzzles to solve
- Multiple rewards encourages replay of the levels
- Lots of trophies to earn, lots of hidden areas to explore
- Sometimes the cut scenes run a little long
- The "puppet theater" load time screen video gets a little old
- Some minor camera issues make jumping more of a challenge
While I'm not totally done with the game, I have to give it a great thumbs up. This is a game that could easily be enjoyed by the whole family. Gear up for the summertime, and spend a little time on the high pirate seas, with this soon to be classic game from Lego!
