This review is from: Oscar Schmidt OB100 Acoustic-Electric Bass with Gig Bag - Natural (Electronics)
For 500 smackers, you'd expect a quality, handmade guitar. Not so, this one made by mass production in the peoples republic. Havent had a chance to plug it in yet, but almost sent it back based on the oursourcing the product originates from.
Granted I wasnt up for the warwick, or $1900 guitar, so for starters, I hope this serves its purpose. But for anyone who wants a quality bass, keep lookin. Bad on me for skimpin on the homework...

Not sure why you said 500 smackers, this is currently advertised at 251.92, however, you are right on about this being a crap bass. Oscar Schmidt is now owned by the same company that currently owns Washburn - the company is US Music Corporation. They bought both brand names around the same time from Fretted Industries, and while they continued to make good guitars under the Washburn name, they made the once highly respectable Oscar Schmidt into a budget line guitar. Any Oscar Schmidts pre circa 2000 (I haven't been able to find the exact year US Music Corp purchased both Washburn and Oscar Schmidt) are great instruments. Read my buyers guide on both Oscar Schmidt and Washburn at http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/syltguides/byauthor/AD3EX5UG7UZPB/ref=cm_aya_bb_guides
