Back To True Form,
This review is from: Metamorphosis (Audio CD)
Undeniably the best female vocalist of contemporary soul and smooth jazz, Maysa Leak returns to true form with her latest release "Metamorphosis". After recording two consecutive classic soul remake albums, Maysa came back in full force with this project which contains all new fresh original material. Produced by Rex Rideout, Chris Davis & Ronnie Garrett, Maysa delivers a knock-out performance on each song. A mixture of up-tempo, mid-tempo and sultry love ballads, sprinkled with a taste of Brazilian flavor, Maysa's silky smooth voice will take you to paradise. This is one of those CDs that you can just pop in, press play, pour a glass of Cabernet (or a vino of your taste) and just chill out from beginning to end without hitting the skip button.
The album starts off with "Simpatico", a mid-tempo song about true love and compatibility - a great song to get the mood flowing. Next comes "My Destiny", featuring Najee (on flute, not sax) and "Never Really Ever", which continue in the same vein as the first track. "Let's Figure It Out" features Nick Colionne on some groovy guitar riffs set to a calypso/house beat. Maysa expresses herself like never before on "I Need A Man". No, this is not your typical "I need a man to sex my body" kinda song that you hear so much on mainstream radio these days, but this song has some serious depth and meaning to it - just listen to the lyrics. "Higher Love" is another great song featuring again both Najee & Nick Colionne. All of the remaining tracks are excellent as well. On the last track, "A Conversation With The Universe", you may want to put the wine down and dance a step or two because this song will make you want to groove and move. This is a great closing song for the album.
Maysa co-wrote most of the songs, probably more than any of her previous albums. This is definitely her best album. You'll just have to hear for yourself - take my word for it. When you buy this CD, I recommend getting three copies: one for the ride, one for the crib and one to give to your best friend. They will love you for it!
In my opinion, this will probably turn out to be her biggest selling album and is definitely Grammy Award material. I only hope that smooth-jazz radio actually give this CD some serious airplay and grant Maysa the respect that she truly deserves.
