fancy cakes made easy,
This review is from: Piece of Cake!: One-Bowl, No-Fuss, From-Scratch Cakes (Spiral-bound)
I was skeptical but i ordered it anyway since this was the only cake book which had 100% 5 star reviews.
I have so far tried 4-5 cakes. All the cakes I tried have been really good. I suspect that has to do a bit with the fact that the recipes all use real butter :) , but hey I would rather make these then pay an arm and a leg from a 'top' bakery.
That said, I docked off one star for the fact that there is some amount of repeat goods, same recipe repackaged as a sheet cake, bundt cake etc.
Another complaint I have is that I wish all recipes had a picture. Like with the chocolate molten cake: Couldn't tell if what i made was really what it was supposed to be like. The serving sizes on the recipes are a bit higher than indicated. something that says serves 9 is really more like 15-16 servings. I guess if you eat a lot of cake its fine :)
As far as 1 bowl goes, yes there is no "mix egg whites first and add yolks later", but don't expect that there is only 1 bowl to clean as obviously you will need to measure 1 cup of milk and then 1 cup of flour etc etc. I woudl say its one bowl-less to clean from most other cake recipes
I halved the recipes and tried these in my toaster oven so i can make small batches.
Book is a hard cover (like a binder) with a spiral binding for the pages which is great for a kitchen as you can leave the book open ( and it stays open)
I love that the recipes are easy to measure (by cup instead of weight for flour), use commonly found ingredients (even for chocolate cakes)
