Strings - Hammered and Plucked,
This review is from: Heartmony (MP3 Music)
HEARTMONY is one of the more unusual releases in the jazz vein to come out this year. It is an inordinately fascinating pairing of the Bulgarian guitarist/composer Hristo Vitchev, whose compositions and recordings and performances with his modern jazz quintet, quartet and duo have lead to praises form critics around the world, with the superlative pianist Weber Iago. The resulting sound is an intimate conversation about strings - both on the keyboard of the piano or on the strut of the guitar. These two gifted artist create a sound that is in many ways suggestive of classical music's Impressionist school while at the same time being very much in the present with folk tunes and enchanting meditative songs that transport the listener to another space, another time, another region of music we have not experienced before.
In Vitchev's words, the title of the collection Heartmony 'is the simultaneous combination of feelings and emotions, especially when produced by experiences, memories, and stimulations pleasing to the heart, body, and soul.' All of the eleven songs are compositions by Vitchev - Under Trees of Color, Over Fields of Grey; Musica Humana; Memories in Black and White; The Last Leaves Which Fell in Fall; Crepuscular Rays (with Prelude); Prelude to Act of Departure; The Imperative Expression; And May We Meet Again; and The Melancholic Heart (with Prelude). The titles are listed because they convey the mood of the music that fills this selection. If ever there were a marriage between classical music and jazz then this Heartmony is it. Hristo Vitchev and Weber Iago have created a very special experience. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, January 12

another memory, to me. the music is projecting a scenery from illusionary memory in my mind, a memory of beautiful love that was never created together, desolating feeling, the soil of my heart is moistened, almost bringing a wistful tear. this kind of inner experience rarely happens in jazz other than ECM music. rich and mellow sensitity springs from Hristo Vichev.
