It has some potential, but not there yet.,
This review is from: OUYA Console and Controller (Console)
Lot's of new games on the store, but the storefront isn't very well organized. Hopefully Ouya will continue to update their software and improve on their organization. Right now there are games that are featured four or more times on the featured categories (XXXXX's favorite game list, Featured, Trending, etc) It would be okay for them to be in a few, but right now it's really repetitive with a small selection of quality games.
Streaming media is going a lot better for me lately, I had my Ouya in another room so it's Wifi didn't have a very strong signal. Moving it closer to my router I can now stream netflix / youtube at 1080p with no problem. Plex and XMBC both work perfectly for me.
While the selection of quality games isn't that great yet, there are a couple that stand out. First is Tower Fall. It's really fun for a party game. It plays kind of like Super Smash Brothers, but with retro graphics and faster pacing. Next is Amazing Frog. This game doesn't look that great, but it is a blast to play with friends. It's a physics based game where you jump run around a level and fall into things / other players. It reminds me a little bit of PAIN on the PS3 (although not nearly as polished). And finally, Beast Boxing Tubro is a punch out style game. Honestly, I haven't played it that much, but it was pretty fun and had solid controls.
I'm a kickstarter backer, and I've had the console for a couple weeks. I don't agree with the reviews that claim the Ouya is the worst piece of hardware released, but I also don't think it's amazing either.
I think the hardware is decent for a $99 console. It's not going to be able to handle any AAA games (unless you use onlive), but it can handle some decent looking games. The controller is pretty comfortable, but not as polished as a AAA console controller like the ones for the XBOX 360 and PS3. The triggers and d-pad leave me wanting more, but they are functional. The rest of the buttons and joysticks have performed fine for me so far. The touchpad is okay, it might get better with updates. One plus for the controllers, they work great with other android devices.
The games/software leave a lot to be desired right now. There are a few gems. For example, Stalagflight is surprising addicting. But most of the current games are simple ports of android games that weren't designed for televisions. Sideloading apps works fine, but not everything runs very smoothly. Sideloaded netflix gives horrible picture quality for example. And some games that should run smoothly on the hardware are laggy.
The potential? Well there are indie games that don't need AAA quality graphics that could be ported to the Ouya, and there are a few games that are in development that look decent. It also will be a great media box if they can get netflix support. XBMC is currently in development, and works for streaming 1080p video over a home network. And of course, it can run emulators for older consoles.
With the update in games today, it has something to offer as a gaming console, but I would still suggest waiting a bit before purchasing if you only are interested in playing games. If you like to tinker with android devices? It's a decent purchase at $99.
edit: Controller has been improved since kickstarter version, but I don't have an updated one to verify that my complaints have been fixed.
I'm pleasantly surprised to find there were quite a few higher quality games released today. I'm adjusting my rating as I feel it is a justified purchase as a gaming console.
If you want to see what Ouya is capable of, check out videos of Shadowgun / Ravensword.

Yes it has XBMC and other media players on it, with the quadcore tegra it can handle HD files from a usb harddrive perfectly.

They changed the controller on the retail version, also on the software side today is its first release date tons of developers have shot for today to release their games so a surge should happen within the week, also it has some big name developers who promised support for it but ofcourse won't release games before the console officially launched so bigger games will start to release aswell.

In reference to Shadowgun, it is on the store today. Along with at least 5 other new games.

Awesome! Edited my review. It's odd they haven't been showcasing Shadowgun since it's one of the most graphical impressive android games. I would think Ouya would be in communication with the developers, they showed it on their kickstarter as a potential game, but never confirmed when it was coming to Ouya.
