This review is from: The Habit (Paperback)
Susan Morse's "Ma" was an artist with a special gift for portrait painting. Her daughter seems to have inherited this gift, but Susan Morse paints her portrait in words. The shades of this complex mother/daughter relationship come to vibrant life with a full palate of emotion-evoking tongue-in-cheek anecdotes dappled throughout the narrative and captures in full force just what it must be like to have a bonafide eccentric for a Ma! This is the real Flying Nun (with photo to prove it).
Susan Morse's writing style with her unvarnished, humorous and often ironic self-reflections were reminiscent for me of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love".
If you don't like to read, get the book for the pictures (some of Ma's art work is included). The book's last page, a stunning photo by David Morse, literally captures it all!
