1.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing Presentation Ruins an Otherwise Fact Filled Series, April 5, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Universe: The Mega Collection (DVD)
The entire series is produced with background music that keeps one constantly on edge. Never one moment of peace to reflect on and enjoy the emormous volume of data and information embedded in each episode. No doubt this could be a great set, but it is produced for an audience that does not mind being dragged along as if it were a never ending sensationalist adventure. Filled with animation that is reproduced over and over, many scenes are monotonous rehashes of previously introduced material. In addition, the series is interspersed with breaks for advertising or station breaks or whatever occurs in the TV land. These breaks simply truncate the immediate scene and then without skipping a beat, picks up with a retake of much of the information already delivered as if your brain were suddenly switched off and you have forgotten what occurred moments before. It is too bad that this set is produced in such a way. As a family, we were looking forward to the production. But because of the high pressure delivery complete with the shortfalls mentioned plus other very annoying features found in sensationalist news broadcasting so common these days, the set will be discarded and we will look for something created more in the style of what David Attenborough has been able to achieve in so many delightful, informative and extremely well produced videos.

I couldn't agree more.......they edited this series like it was a episode of a Star Wars movie. I think most people want to marvel at the information and visuals rather than be bombarded with cgi scenes repeatedly every five seconds.
Can you imagine if the producers edited the series Planet Earth or Life like they have done with the Universe series.

Thank you for this review -- I was dangerously close to clicking the Buy button! This type of editing started about 10-12 years ago and annoys me to no end. It's an ADD editing style that, to me, wastes time that could otherwise be used to impart more information; "Here's what's coming next!!!!", "Here's what you saw five minutes ago!!!!!" Ugh!! Thanks to your review, I'm saving $76.

Thanks to both this review and these two reaffirming comments for their important, informative critical comments. I, too, was about to purchase this fascinating-looking set, but I have decided to wait until a better production on the subject appears. I couldn't bear to watch a program with the annoying characteristics mentioned by these critical commentors.

Agree! Rehashing and repeating scenes and material over and over, and the "lets start from the beginning after a station break" are all annoying hallmarks of the History Channel. Its almost as if they don't have enough material for a full episode, so they just repeat things over and over and over and over and....

I stopped watching this series after 2 episodes when it was broadcast on History for these exact reasons. By the end of an episode, I had a headache from the anxiety-provoking action thriller background music and visual effects.

I typically love shows in this genre, but The Universe consistently disappoints. There seems to be no topic that they cannot use to speculate on the end of humanity, the end of the earth, or the end of the universe. After a few sessions, I was quite ready for SOMETHING to end. Good critical review.

this editing style goes back further than 10 to 12 years. it started with music videos, and may have taken a while to creep into other areas.
anyway, I really appreciate these reviews and comments. you have saved me from a purchase I would surely regret.

Thanks for the review, you saved me from spending a lot on a disappointing purchase. When I saw it was produced by the History Channel, I had a feeling it would be just as you described, based on another show of theirs. Too bad the BBC produced such a snoozer with Brian Cox.

I like how you say the set will be "discarded." Are you actually going to throw the box set away in a trash receptacle? or at least swat it out of your field of vision? I would recommend you try re-selling it before you consider discarding it.

Wrong, the editing is NOT as bad as this reviewer is Attempting to make it be. These are TELEVISION PROGRAMS being wrapped up into blu ray sets. Of course each episode is only 45 minutes long and there Will be breaks the minor breaks with some explanation at times of what came before, but they are NOWHERE near as bad as this reviewer is stating, PERIOD!! If you do not buy this set just because of that? You are missing out on the BEST Universe/Cosmos series you could have ever watched!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Look at all the 5 star reviews!! Youre going to go by the 1% of junk reviews??
