This review is from: The Adventures of Sir Balin the Ill-Fated (The Knights’ Tales Series) (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What's this?)I ordered this book for my 7-year-old son, who like most boys his age has a fascination for knights and fantasy elements. Sir Balin the ILl-Fated is an enjoyable romp by Gerald Morris. It is not only an easy read but it is illustrated besides, which was a nice surprise.
It begins like many fairy tales, simply and elegantly. Some of the vocabulary was a bit trying for my son, for example, "Who the deuce are you?" left my son wondering what a "deuce" is, and not being Christian he was puzzled by "christened" (the author is a minister). "Inert" was another puzzler. There are neat little asides to the reader, for example, "Really, people should have noticed early on how inefficient fighting with a lance actually is, but oddly enough, it never seemed to sink in. People kept on pointing lances at each other, and mostly missing, for years and years."
Despite the various small challenges, it is a book enjoyed very much by my son and I will be looking for other books in the Knights' Tale Series.
