2.0 out of 5 stars MUCH Room for improvement., October 30, 2011
This review is from: Simplisafe2 Wireless Home Security System 8-piece Plus Package (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought my system a while ago, and I'm just OK with it; It's better than nothing.

Systems from other major brands offer system controls using your cell phone, and more than just motion and entry sensor alarms.

While the SimpliSafe system is wireless, it hasn't reached that level yet. Upgrades are very slow, and there may be problems with sensor range and cell signal strength.

So if you're looking for a basic, reasonably priced wireless system that you own (not rent), this may be a solution for you.
---------------------------------------------
Update: "New" product releases are way too slow, and by that time there isn't a new design or anything special about it, just bland and late. Other companies and some self-kits on Amazon offer newer features and sensors than SimpliSafe and have for years. So, because of the release timeline and features, I wouldn't recommend even a basic system to a friend .

This is an out-of-date review and does not come close to matching what is available with SS2 now available.
Remote with smart phones and free app does it all. Much better than what is described here.

While the SS2 system is improved with more sensors & greater range, I decided not to upgrade. The keypad & remote are still very basic, and the cellular signal the system relies upon can be spotty in some areas. Even with apps & online control (which rely on the cell signal), when compared to other systems, the SS2 needs improvement that is slow in developing. Far from being a cutting edge system, it's better than nothing; you own it, and it comes with a 60 day guaranty.

Charis, could you please offer details on how other systems are better than Simplisafe 2? I am about ready to buy and want to make sure the system is great. Much appreciated.

There are other wireless systems such as: ADT pulse, Smarthome, Brinks, ATT Digital Life, Alarm.com, Vivint, Protectamerica, Homeshield, etc. They are more expensive, but also offer more features.
(price compare page on the homeshield.us.com)

Whether other systems are better depends on your personal needs. Yes, SS2 is more affordable, and has basic security features, including a new temp and CO2 sensors (again basic). But if you are looking to compare it to the ADT Pulse systems seen in commercials, you might be disappointed.

SS2 satisfaction relies on price-point , your need for "basic" security, and a DIY attitude. CS is available M-F only, there are no installers, and you'll be the one chasing down system problems. To use online command center, you'll *need* wireless coverage, & you are only able to send information to and from the Base Station over the cell network. (You can use broadband or hardline phone svc for alarm backup though..). The monitoring & components are proprietary - they don't work with non-SS components.
But with SS, you have 60 days to test the system, & you can save money ordering if someone refers you. It's affordable & mobile, so you can take it with you on vacation, or when you move. It belongs to you, so no rental fees, no contracts (including monitoring), and it does offer mobile/online command.
---So just take your time and choose what best fits your personal needs!
