Wino wins again!,
This review is from: 13 (MP3 Music)
In the halls of Doom history, there will be a special wing dedicated to Scott "Wino" Weinrich. The man is a one man Doom machine living at the center of some of the seminal acts of the last 20 years. Saint Vitus, The Hidden Hand, The Obssessed, Spirit Caravan and others are all projects of this amazing guitarist and vocalist.
Like the title, any fan of Wino can have a premonition that "Premonition 13" will not break any new ground. Still, giving it a listen will reveal it certainly epitomizes what Wino does well. It grooves, it rocks and most of all, it is HEAVY. But unlike other Doom efforts, the artist is not dominated by the art. Wino proves his mastery of the form by producing unique and fresh sounding tracks in something that should be worn out.
The whole album is filled with interesting takes and amazing, monstrous riffs. It's as strong an album as anything he has ever released and in fact, delivers ten-fold. The music is not obtuse in the slightest. Some doom artists try to bury you in the heavy but this album actually embraces and wraps you in its mastery.
Honestly, this is an excellent album. If you even looked at the cover of an album of any of those aforementioned bands, buy this. It is the best of what he does presented in a fresh and interesting container. You will rock, you will dream and the heavy will keep on coming.
