Invaluabe for Grammar Challenged Students,
This review is from: S. Adorni's,K. Primorac's 2nd(second) edition (English Grammar for Students of Italian. (English Grammar Series) [Paperback])(1995) (Paperback)
This is a really well designed book, which excels in documenting parts of Italian grammar that do not necessarily have a corresponding concept in English. This is particularly useful for those that are too well grounded in (or attached to) English and struggle to learn another language's rule system, and it is particularly useful to students that do not understand English grammatical constructs, such as native speakers that intuitively use English, but might not know the grammar.
Perhaps unknown to many is English has a lot of ambiguity and simplification over the years that causes problems in language learning for monolingual or semi-lingual students. It's been my personal observation of my college peers in America that many students get stuck due to their lack of understanding of basic language function.
Some specific examples are words like "that" that has multiple functions in English: pronoun, adjective, adverb, conjunction, which in other language is actually a different word. Another example would be a word like "him", which can be a direct object, indirect object, or object of the preposition, which in other languages could be written and placed differently than in English. This book smooths all that out.
For those that have learned a few languages from different language families (such as Arabic, Persian, German) and/or knowledgeable in English grammar, then this book may be rather redundant to their existing knowledge.
