Once again the COD franchise drops the ball on the campaign. They got it right back with World at War with the four player coop, but then for some reason they thought it would be a good idea to take it away in future iterations. That shameful trend continues here. They say they don't have cooperative campaign because it doesn't "fit with the story." Let's call it what it is folks--lazy writing. If cooperative play doesn't fit with your story, you write a new one. Don't make excuses for it--you just didn't want ot do it. Having said that the campaign is short and moderately entertaining and I knocked off a star because it was, as usual, not quite what people deserve in a top tier game.
I'll be honest, the only zombie mode that was ever any good was the original map on World At War; the one that started it all. EVERY ONE OF THEM AFTER THAT WAS GARBAGE. They kept trying to make it "bigger and better" and in the process they forgot what made the mode great. Instead of putting your back to a wall and fighting for your life, they added a bunch of moronic gimicks like having to run around and turn on power, etc. I was STUNNED to learn today that they actually seemed to have learned from their colossal blunder. They've adjusted some mechanics as optional, like the moronic hell hounds. There's no more running around and turning on stupid power switches. It's back to what made it great; fighting for your life with some friends. Guns are fantastic and they seem to be more generous with ammo. You can also adjust the difficulty which is a nice touch if you have a two man crew. The feel of the zombies is also akin to the original, where they start out weak and gradually get stronger. In the later maps they started out ridiculously strong and got stronger VERY fast. Instead of a nice hour to 90 minute match where you'd make it to level 20-28, they had made it twice as difficult and took the fun out of it. Thank you for not screwing this game mode up AGAIN.
This is where I have to knock them a little bit. Multiplayer is great and all that, but frankly I really enjoyed the combat training mode that they had last time. IT made for some fun and casual games where my buddies and I could play against some bots. They have expanded the options this time around, and allow all game modes to be played with bots. Nicely done!! But then they lose a step by not letting players level up in private matches against bots. Don't bother telling me how people could just level up against the easy bots in private matches and then play in regular multiplayer. There is an easy fix--do JUST what they did last time--if you play combat training privately, that is the only place your experience counts. Problem solved. For some reason they chose to take away that options. I'm sure they had some brilliant reason...
