CD much better than the download
, January 11, 2008
This review is from: In Rainbows (Audio CD)
My review is not on the music itself. Others are more capable of discussing the merits or lack thereof. I enjoyed In Rainbows and rate it five starts but the point of my review is on the quality of the CD compared to the original download.
I downloaded In Rainbows when they first released it and paid nothing. My wife says I am lame for doing this but my reasoning was that I didn't know how good the quality would be ... sure enough 160 kbs not even variable bit rate!
Anyways I bought the CD last week and ripped it to FLAC.
The verdict? Much better and the greater detail is easy to hear ... Radiohead typically has a lot of little nuances to their music and the full resolution of the CD makes these liitle details easier to notice. In fact the download was disappointing but the sound of the CD is amazing and more than makes up for it.
You don't need expensive equiment to appreciate the difference you simply need to listen to the music. Even my wife who is nearly tone deaf and shakes her head when I discuss soundstage, imaging, and other things she normally cannot discern has remarked how much better the CD sounds.
In short, if you like this album you owe it to yourself to buy the CD and rip it to at least 192 variable bit rate to fully enjoy what Radiohead has created on this album. I'm also very glad I paid zero for the download. Which my wife still considers lame.
