One Step Forward and Four Steps Back,
This review is from: FIFA Soccer 13 - Playstation 3 (Video Game)
Let me say that FIFA 12 was probably one of the best sports games I have ever owned, rivaling NHL '94, Madden '03 and NHL '11. It was a great game, top to bottom. But seeing how EA has seemingly dropped the ball with many of their games in 2012, I bought FIFA 13 nervously anticipating the same may happen to this great franchise.
Sadly, those fears were quickly confirmed in just the first 30 minutes of owning this game.
The good? The graphics are as good as ever. The intros to the game are more like television and I can hear more individual cheers for the teams. But that's where we end with the pro's.
1) The AI. What happened EA?! In the 5 online games I have played, both I and the opponent routinely end up with 5 on 0 offensive rushes like it's a fast break in basketball. Seriously, the defenders, and even the sweeper are playing at a level where the defensive midfielders should be, even if you set the commands to Ultra Defensive. All one needs to do is max out a lob pass and here we go with a 5 on 0 break. It's ludicrous.
2) The Gameplay. I feel like I'm in an arcade and it's the year 1998. The whole experience feels totally artificial. All of this about first touches and passing? Rubbish. It's all about lobs, and hitting the speed button. For a sport that relies so much on strategy and precision passing, there is basically none to be found in this version.
3) The Sound. Almost totally the same from FIFA 12, and the sounds on the pitch are horrid. You literally don't hear a sound when the ball is kicked, or going into the net. The crowd is also usually completely dead.
4) Menus. The load time for everything is literally three times slower than last year. Sometimes cramming in photos and other graphics is just not necessary. It should not take 5 minutes to just load up a game online only to then be told the other opponent already left.
Now I will say I have not dealt with any bugs yet so perhaps patches came through already. But personally, in my opinion the FIFA franchise just went from producing a stellar award winning game, to something I'm looking to sell already.
Electronic Arts. I do not know what has happened to you. But for me, and millions of others, I can only hope that we'll see a good company produce some good games so that you guys have to get off your collective behinds and stop ripping off the consumer. They're already turned me off of Madden and the NHL franchises. You can now add FIFA to the list.
