3.0 out of 5 stars why does sony take away features?, October 21, 2012
This review is from: Sony DVP-FX980 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
If Sony wants to make a newer model of a DvD player, you would think they would improve it, not take away features. It is quite puzzling.
Pros: All sony players have much clearer picture quality than most other companies. That really is the most important feature. It also has the ability to fast forward, and rewind, not just skip chapters like many other players
Cons: They took away 3 features!!!!! 1) swivel screen 2) instead of 2 audio headphone jacks- which were on the previous model, they only put one, so if you take the player in the car with you, only one person could use headphones at a time, instead of 2 kids sharing it. 3)THe battery is not replaceable.

You can get a splitter for the headphone jack. Not expensive.

That's the first thing that it came to my mind when I saw this new model. How come the new model lost the swivel ???????? ... this looks like an older model instead.

Sony, like any company, is trying to make the best product it can, at the lowest possible price and still make a profit. Had they left these features on the current model, it probably would've cost more since labor and materials cost more every year.

I wonder how much it's costing them in lost sales due to gimping a previously great product? That is rarely a good strategy IMO.

I wish I had been smart enough to read your comment before purchase. I was bummed that the swivel feature was taken away. We have the previous Model for our oldest child and bought the new one for the youngest. Wish they would bring back the previous model. I may just go and by a used one off ebay and cross my fingers!

What is the previous model number? I may look for it. Also, can this current model fold flat, i.e. to be hung on the back of the seat of our mini van?

music lover says:
the older model is dvp fx950. It has a rotating screen, 2 audio jacks, and a removable battery.
the newer one is dvp fx980. It cannot be folded flat, has 1 audio jack, and the battery is permanent, so if it dies, you can't replace the battery, you can only use it with the plug.
