Ciara- The Crunk&B Princess Re-Establishes Herself!,
This review is from: Ciara (MP3 Music)
It was almost as if Ciara's time had passed and gone. All those hits from Goodies and The Evolution seemed like a distant memory. While all the singers of the present rose, Ciara took a bit of a backslide. Well, BACKSLIDE OVER! Maybe she was giving the rest of the artists a chance to play catch up. The Princess got back on her game with her self-titled album, Ciara. It's fitting that she self-titled it because it has her personality all over it: the hard-hitting bass heavy beats, dance cuts and dripping with sensuality.
You can feel all over the CD, Ciara got back to the basics. The basics which made her the top-notch superstar she was for that four-five year great run. From pretty much beginning to end, you really can't deny the feeling to bob your head to energetic and over-infectious beats! The lyrics are mostly of just sexual content, but Ciara sings them so smoothly...so seductively that you just get lured into the music!
The drums, claps and Nicki help Ciara open up the CD with I'm Out, probably the girls-night out gettin' over they man anthem. This help set the table for the whole joint! Sophomore comes with that dance heavy boom-bap with Ciara playing her best sex ed teacher. Lyrics saying, "You ready for this ride, Get your saddle up/I need some one with stamina/I had him all year, Now he back around cuz he like the way I put it down" or "So you say you a bachelor, Well step your game up and get your masters." Whoa. Very playful stuff there in more ways than one! Body Party it so smooth, laid back and sensual with Ciara singing oh so softly with her raising it up leading into the chorus. Shout out to the Ghost Town DJs My Boo sample ('96 babayyy to all the 80s and 90s babies!) and how they slowed it down. Beautiful how they did that. Keep On Lookin' is almost like a Dirty mashup with the combination of crunk and a bit of Chopped & Screwed with what kind of sounds like Mike Jones on part of the hook. I'm totally FEELING this track! A track that may get overlooked but shows what Ciara is capable of vocally is Where You Go. Mixes crunk with a bit of country twang and swang. Seems like a weird combo, but somehow it works to me. Couple of other tracks that's going to get you are Super Turnt Up, slow heavy funk that features NASCAR sounds that help rev up the energy, and DUI which features pretty good vocals as she lays a sexual rendezvous-out-on-the-highway scene. Overdose didn't grab my attention like some of the other songs but it's getting there. And if you happen to get the Target Exclusive, you are in for a treat with Boy Outta Here. This could be like No Scrubs '13, except slowed down and with more bass & funk. Ciara telling the boys that's chasing here she ain't all about them pockets, need a man to take my heart and lock it. All about dem dollas, 'Boy' outta here. Got a girl and wanna holla, 'boy' outta here. Got a Benz but still living with yo mama, 'boy' outta here. Dang! Don't go so hard on 'em, Princess! And she rounds it up with the cool upbeat dance cut One Night With You.
There were a couple of songs I could have did without in Read My Lips and the other Nicki Minaj-featured Livin' It Up. So this album is not quite flawless. But it more than brings Ciara back to the forefront of the R&B game. Using the formula from her early success just feels right when it comes to her. Wouldn't surprise me if this catches a nomination come Grammy time. But for the meantime, if you are looking for the Dance Album of the Year (and perhaps Comeback of the Year), look no further! Go ahead and cop this to see what it is I'm talkin about! She's BACKKKK!
P.S. Even though I didn't give the CD a 5 star, it is over a 4. More in the 4.25-4.5 range. May even change the rating in a few days after a few more listens.
