Moving, Important Literary Fiction,
This review is from: Motherland (Hardcover)
Motherland is already one of my favorite books of the year. It is page-turning, heartbreaking, effervescent. I know I will be thinking about this book for a long, long time. And then I will read it again.

Stephen D. Weiss says:
Dear DS, If you have not already done so, I suggest you read "Hitler's Willing Executioner's" by Goldhagen, "Ordinary Men" by Browning, and "The Good Old Days" by Klee, Dressen and Riess. The German people to this day will never admit to their level of complicity in getting rid of their handicapped, mentally ill, homosexuals, Roma, Jehovah's Witnesses, Pacifists, and of course Jews. I served in Europe in the 1970's and met so many ordinary Germans who were either in some kind of fog or were still apologists for Hitler's regime. One German even told me, "All of it was worth it because Hitler made the passenger trains run on time." Read these books and then you judge the alleged 'good' Germans.

DS, I agree, and thank you for elucidating the non-Facsist view that even a pancake has more than one side. Decades of tiresome, strenuous, concerted, museum-building efforts to silence this book's point of view as abominable using propaganda that screams, "We are pure. We are brilliant. We are sin-free. We are smarter than all idiot Christians. We are ordained by god as superior" and "all Germans (or people who dislike us) are evil and vicious" is equivalent to KKK, white supremacist bullcrap.
