Worth the effort ten times over,
This review is from: A Thread of Grace (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've read this year. Ms. Russell weaves together diverse characters and a complex plot with a skill that is absolutely breathtaking. She is an absolute master of her craft, the kind of writer who makes other writers jealous. Looking over the reviews of this book, I noticed that, generally, the negative reviewers had one of two complaints.
First, some complained that the book was complex and found the mulitple characters and switching of points of view to be confusing. This is a complicated book, no question about that. Intially, there is a fair amount of work involved in figuring out who is who, but the story is so compelling that I found the work to be more than worth the effort.
Second, some reviewers seemed to be disappointed because this book was different from her others. In fact, it seems to be an entirely different genre. This is the first book I've read by this author, so I really can't speak to how it compares to her earlier efforts, but I do wish readers would allow authors the freedom to explore different genres and styles. It seems so many authors are forced to write the same book over and over because readers demand it and of course, these are same readers that eventually turn on the author because his or her writing become stale and predictible.
Cudos to Ms. Russell for her willingness to explore new genres and her refusal to be backed into a literary corner. I'm a fan of historical fiction, but I'll be searching out Russell's titles even though fantasy isn't my usual cup of tea. Whatever the genre, writing as good as this is hard to come by and worth seeking out.
