Close to good,
This review is from: The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have started and run four small business. When I first jumped into The $100 Startup, I was very impressed with the concept and where Guillebeau started to go with the book. As I got into the meat of the program, though, it started to feel much more like a news reporter's broadcast of starting a business than the notes of someone who's done it.
For example, in Moving On Up (I would contend one of the most important chapters of the book), Guillebeau makes an excellent outline of where the startup needs to focus for growth. Then he fails to detail critical points like A/B testing, which may not be familiar to the intended audience of this title. He furthermore editorializes with statements like, "your conversion rate can be 30% or higher" (p.191) with no reason or reference beyond his own say-so, which undermines the integrity of the surrounding prose with their unsupported presumption.
Overall I think Guillebeau does a brilliant job of balancing rah-rah storytelling with practical planning. Where The $100 Startup falls short (though I hope will be amended in an updated version or future title) is increasing details on what the would-be entreprepeur needs to know for execution (the technical aspects), while editing out some of the hyperbolic rhetoric and promises.
