I bought the lastest 401 model because the specs suggested some great improvements over the 400. I had the Panasonic 520 that got damaged so thought I would try the Yamaha. The Yamaha has a full receiver with a 280w amp and built in subwoofer. The bar is about 10 inches shorter than the Panasonic which has the amp built into the speaker bar. The Panasonic has pretty good sound but was not very flexible to setup. The 401 is awesome to setup and has many, many configurable controls. The receiver also has an FM tuner! However, the soundbar was CHEAPLY made and sounded awful - it looked as if some children designed in and put it together. Because the 401 has a full receiver, it allows for connecting external speakers with plenty of power to drive them. So, I bought a pair of Energy Mini Vs with an Energy Mini V center channel speaker and WOW, the sound is simply AWESOME. Yah, this certainly made an expensive system but I was able to salvage the receiver which I really liked due to it being so configurable. Also, the built in subwoofer is sooo tight and clean as compared to the Panasonic which was too loose and "boomy". I made something great out of something that at first really dissapointed me. The 401 is a true 5.1 system when you connect external speakers.
