5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Set of Teaching Strategies and Techniques, December 16, 2011
This review is from: Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College (K-12) (Paperback)
I read this book as part of a discussion group at a school where I teach. I was put off by the hokey-sounding title, and was not expecting much. After reading the book, I highly recommend it for both new and veteran teachers. As with any book about teaching techniques, I don't agree with everything, nor should I. Lemov said that he developed the ideas after observing many teachers, and he used the practices of successful teachers. For new teachers, there are probably many ideas that they can use that were not covered in their coursework or student teaching experiences. Veteran teachers can review the techniques to see how many they already use, which ones they could try as a a way of varying their style, and which ones they already use, but could tweak to be more effective. The book is clearly written with supportive examples of techniques. There's no need to read this cover to cover, which I actually did do, but teachers could pick out one technique and try it in their classroom. One deceptively simple strategy is "No Opt Out," meaning that students cannot escape participating by saying, "I don't know." Instead, the teacher can call on another student to correctly answer the question and turn back to Silent Sam and ask him/her to repeat the correct answer. The ideas cover everything from effective lesson planning, to classroom management to building a classroom culture. My only real criticism involves the accompanying video clips on the accompanying DVD that show some of the techniques in action. The video quality is poor, and there is no narration, so it's often hard to see exactly what technique is being highlighted. The DVD aside, there is much practical information that teachers can immediately apply in their classrooms.
