A friend and I stopped by the candy shop before a movie and I was drawn to these little small antique-looking packets. I turned it around and read how it had been known as the very first breath freshener from the 1890s. It was .99 cents and quite a curiosity to me so I ended up buying it. As my friend and I were standing in line, I ripped it open, handed him a few and popped a small, black square into my mouth. I was in for a surprise...and not a very good one I might add! As my friend and I gagged for a few seconds, he ran to the trash can and spat them out. I was so confused...is it supposed to taste like perfume? You might as well grab a bottle of perfume and spray this stuff in your mouth! Yuck! I think I'm going to have nightmares about this stuff...

Licorice scent was common in perfumes back in the 1800s. Stop reading so much into the "original advertising".
If you like black licorice you'll love these mighty fine little confections.

I don't understand what's up with all the negative comments to my review. I didn't care for the taste. If you like it then that's your personal taste, I on the other hand think they are gross. I'm allowed to have my own thoughts and form my own opinions. If you like them, then great, you really don't need to read my review. I'm posting for people who have never tried them. I'm also allowed to have my own personal preferences. And I definitely do not prefer these. Peace.

I think your review is hilarious. I got a pack of this stuff in basket of candy from the 50's. Every time I trick someone into eating one of these little things, I come back here and read them your hilarious review. Very spot on and very funny.

I think if I popped a bunch of them in my mouth at one time that would be a bit too much. They are to be eaten one at a time and you must be over 50 to enjoy them. haha.
The taste just reminds me of when I was a kid and eating them. Kind of a nostalgic thing.
